This place still creeps me out. I head upstairs in silence together with Josh and Arden, deeper into the fortification and closer to all the zealots that walk these halls. Downstairs Breber is still lecturing Connor on the finer points of Heaven’s Hand. That’s what he prefers to call us. Like it’s more civilized or something. The Hounds of God is an old name but at least it’s more on the up and up.

I’ve only ever heard their side of history. The way Josh tells it, they were forced to form a secret society. The Hounds seriously got with the program a few hundred years ago. First they organized just to survive and then eventually to lay down the law. They wrap it all up in religion because everything back then was but I’ve seen for myself how Darwinian things can get, even if they’d never admit to it.

Arden knows that other version of history first-hand, no doubt. He hangs back now, brooding like some character out of a Brontë novel. Josh leads the way, as comfortable here as he is on any football field. Mr. Team Captain. He’s supposed to be the hero of the story. The one who comes to the rescue. I’m all for girl power but I really wish someone had saved me from him.

The abbey is ginormous and my memory isn’t clear from the first (and only) time I was here. This is the last place on Earth I ever wanted to come back to. Especially with Josh. After the accident, he brought me here to get better. Apparently it’s standard practice but all those months being trapped within these walls, I couldn’t even look at him. Somehow I hoped the truth of what happened would collapse between us like a mineshaft and forever bury us apart. For such a long time I wished he would disappear. But even when he was out of sight, a ghost of him haunted me.

When we get to a landing, the staircase opens up to a wide hall with lines of doors on either side. The only sources of light are torches in wall sconces. It triggers a memory and, as the guys continue walking, I know without looking that the doors on their wrought iron hinges have locks on the outside. Most bitten werewolves would have seen the inside of one of these rooms before.

One of the heavy doors slams shut and I snap out of it. Arden is gone and Josh stands alone now beneath a flickering fire. My room is up another level with the girls. Living arrangements are never co-ed among the Hounds. Too much werewolf mojo to be trusted. The idea of walking up those steps alone, though...

“Madison?”

His voice carries in the long corridor. I pull myself together and walk over to him. There’s no way I can let on that this place is getting to me already.
